Social Media Content Creators Driving Parallel Market for Unapproved Slimming Drug
A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, based on recent findings.
Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Online
The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to contact these profiles directly for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with numerous of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers market the substance there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
This medication is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Experts Express Worries
However, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals administering products of uncertain source.
Some experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Implementation
Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some influencers try to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.
Platform Reaction and Material Removal
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic material and banned related hashtags and query recommendations. The company said it was committed to keeping the platform secure and allocating resources in enhancing compliance measures.
Online Trading Operations
Investigations also found communities with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, populated with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and detailed instructions for mixing or administering at residence.
After minutes of entering one community, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged testing documentation. None asked about body mass, health issues or past usage.
Item Details and Costs
Inside these communities, posts show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens typically priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Actions
A representative for the messaging service stated it actively moderated harmful material on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind this drug is sound, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in interest to current price rises for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to social media. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has already seen individuals injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
